Stuck With Your Organic Garden? Use These Tips To Find Your Way!

315

In the world of organic gardening, there are plenty of great resources available to both new and experienced organic gardeners alike. There are many e-guides, books, videos, and other resources available. This set of tips contains some of the best advice for helping a good organic gardener become a great organic gardener.

One way to create a great organic garden is to allow for a portion of your yard to be undeveloped for wildlife. Certain wildlife can be good for an organic garden; birds and insects can help your plants reproduce and be as healthy as they can be!

If you want to start a small organic garden indoors, evaluate the amount of natural light that is present. If you are living in a place that does not have a lot of natural sunlight, think about cultivating plants that do well in lower lighting situations. If your plants still need more light, there are always artificial light sources that you can use.

It can be extremely fast and easy to plant perennials into your garden. Simple slice into the soil with a spade, flip the turf, and mulch the area with 3 to 4 inches of wood chips. Allow a few weeks to pass by before you dig down into the applied soil.

Having a garden of perennials can be an easy and quick process. Simply use a spade or small shovel to get under the grass or turf and flip it over. Then, using wood chips, cover the area to a depth of three or four inches. You want to then give the area about a couple of weeks, then you want your new perennials planted by digging into it.

Have plastic bags on hand to put over dirty gardening shoes. You will save time and be back in the garden much more quickly by doing this.

Sprouting seeds need less warmth than before. Take your plants out of the heat once they start to grow. Take any plastic film off of your containers because they hold in heat and humidity. To know when it is time for this, keep a careful eye on your seeds.

Pine can make surprisingly great mulch. There are some plants that thrive in acidic soil. If your garden contains plants like this, there are few things simpler than spreading some pine needles across your beds. Go ahead and cover the beds you have with needles a couple of inches and while they decompose, they actually disperse some acid into the soil.

Organize your gardening so that you can work efficiently. If it takes you thirty minutes to find a needed tool, then you are doing something wrong. Keep your tools well-maintained and stored away in a designated place. That way you always know where they are and they are ready to use when you need them. Wear pants with several pockets or use a tool belt.

Coffee grounds are good for your soil. Coffee beans are loaded with nitrogen, which offers nourishment for plants. Usually, nitrogen is limited with a plant, but using coffee grounds, diluted urea, or compost can make your plants grow faster and taller.

Cover your muddy shoes with plastic bags. This allows you to keep going, getting back to your garden quickly.

Try to use untreated wood, brick or stone and make a raised bed. If you choose wood, it needs to be naturally rot resistant and untreated. The most popular options for this type of project are cypress, locust and cedar woods. In order to avoid toxic substances from getting into the ground and perhaps into your vegetables, avoid using treated wood to enclose or demarcate different sections of your vegetable garden. In the event your vegetable garden already has treated wood as part of its enclosure, consider replacing it, or painting it, or wrapping the treated wood in some protective covering. Keep in mind that if any of the untreated wood is below the ground, you should dig it up to make sure that you completely protect your vegetable garden from the chemicals in the treated wood.

Coffee Grounds

Organic gardening may sometimes require more effort than resorting to chemicals, but the payoff in the end is well worth the work. While chemicals offer an easy solution to many common gardening problems, the organic method is far healthier for you and everyone you share your food with.

Add coffee grounds to your garden’s soil. These coffee grounds have many nitrogenous nutrients that your plants could use. It is best for your plants to use coffee grounds that are part of a blend of ingredients in the compost or soil you are using for your plants, rather than directly adding coffee grounds to your garden plants.

Organic foods are beneficial because they have not been contaminated by pesticides. While this is good for your family’s health, you will want to be sure to check even more for bugs and other pests.

Make sure you consider adequate spacing when planting your garden, so that each plant is given room enough to grow and flourish. You can easily underestimate how much space the plants need until they begin to grow. The plants will inevitably need to unfurl and spread, but they also need the circulation of air from open spaces. Think ahead and give each plant room for expansion, by properly spacing the seeds.

Plant your own garlic with organic methods. Plant organic cloves in spring or fall and use moist, drained soil. Place them about one or two inches deep into the soil pointed upwards and four inches apart. As the garlic shoots grow, you can snip them and use them for cooking. The bulbs are ripe for harvesting when the tops area turns brown. To harden the bulbs’ skin, dry them for several days in the sun. The garlic should be stored out of direct sunlight in a cool, dry place.

You can use something like a laundry basket to gather all of your produce together when the time comes. This type of basket can double as a large colander for the fruits and vegetables you pick. When you put your produce in a basket, you can then rinse it off and let it strain any excess water through the laundry basket holes.

To eliminate pests naturally, look for plants and flowers that repel harmful insects and animals without damaging your garden. Some natural insecticides are stronger and more effective than the chemically engineered synthetic pesticides that are commercially available. However, due to their biological makeup, botanical insecticides often have very fast decay periods and disappear rapidly.

Want to kill weeds naturally? You need to have many layers of newspapers in order to provide proper weed control. Weeds can only grow in sunlight. By placing newspaper over them, they will not get light and suffocate. Newspapers break down over time, and they make a great addition to compost. Add a layer of mulch on top to make it look more attractive!

A perennial garden can be set up in a few easy steps. Cut underneath the turf, then flip it. Next, use wood chips to cover the area. You’ll be able to dig into your new garden to plant out perennials within a few weeks.

When planting seeds in containers, remember that the planting depth should be around three times bigger than the seed size. It is important to note though, that not all seeds are covered to this depth, as some need direct sunlight to grow properly. Some examples are petunias and ageratum. If you are unsure about the specific needs of your seeds, you should consult your local garden center or conduct further research online. Important things to look for include water requirements, ideal soil type, and recommended sunlight exposure.

Using a soaker hose to water the garden is probably your best choice. The water slowly seeps from these hoses and is positioned so the roots get the water, and the leaves remain dry. This is less tedious than watering by hand, and they consume less water than using sprinklers.

Creating a trap with beer can help reduce the number of slugs in your garden. Take a glass jar and bury it in your garden so that the top of it is level with the soil. Fill the jar with beer to an inch below the jar’s top. Slugs will be attracted to the beer and fall into the jar.

Making beds is one of the most important skills you need to acquire. To begin this process, cut under the turf and leave a space open. Flip it over and cover it with a three inch layer of wood chips. Let it set a few weeks and then cut in it, then you plant.

Treated Wood

Try to keep your garden diverse. A larger variety of plants in your garden will attract more wildlife. Try to keep nature in balance by planting a variety of species in the garden. A diverse garden is incredibly attractive. It’s also very rewarding and relaxing.

Build raised beds with untreated stone, brick or wood. If you are to use wood, you should make sure that the wood is not treated and is also naturally rot resistant. Cypress, locust and cedar are all very good choices. Using untreated wood is especially important for veggie gardens, because chemicals from treated wood could leach into the soil, affecting your food. If you must use treated wood, consider using a liner to keep chemicals out of the soil.

What plants are native to your area? Bushes, native grasses, and flowers should be the essentials of your landscaping needs. You can reduce the use of pesticides and fertilizers by selecting plants that correspond to the soil you have and to the climate. Plants that are native will work with a compost that is made of native ingredients.

Change how much you water your plants with the changing of the seasons. You should also adjust your watering habits if the temperature or amount of rainfall changes dramatically. The amount of water you use each time should be dependent on the water quality, the soil type and what time of day you are doing it. In warm climates with high humidity, for instance, plants often develop fungal infections when water is applied to the leaves. Instead, the roots should be thoroughly watered.

Your organic garden would be wonderful in a shady area. These types of gardens are incredibly low maintenance, which many people will be relieved to hear. You will also eliminate time and effort by a reduced need for watering your garden. This will cause slower plant growth, but there will also be less weeds to take care of in the garden.

Now you know a little more on how you can be a successful organic gardener. There is plenty of information out there for you to use, it’s all a matter of how you apply it. With this in mind, you can refine your own methods to successfully grow a beautiful organic garden.

Grow crops that are high-value. Think about the different types of grasses, vegetables and flowers that you enjoy most. It’s okay if your answers are non-traditional! If you plant plants that cost you more to purchase at the local market than what they cost to look after, then in the long run, you will save a lot of money. So, sow seeds of plants that you like and reap the rewards in the future.
